THE FUÑATA.

March 2019

Ric Oquita, a seasoned playwright and performer from San Diego, is embarking to tell the story of his father inventing “a non-violent piñata.” However, the Fuñata did not find use during its creator’s lifetime. The device has yet to be bought or sold by any individual or company; Oquita’s story (in development) is about the promise he made to his father that he would find a use for the Fuñata. Harkening to how Oquita’s father aspired to sell the invention to interested buyers, the play will act like a dramatized pitch to show a dream coming true on both fictional and real levels. Oquita’s performance will weave in the spiritual, religious and ceremonial meanings behind the piñata’s history, integrating movement, sign language and dance into the storytelling.
